University District to Host Outdoor Summer Block Party to Celebrate Opening of First Block of Retail Main Street
On Sunday, September 19 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., University District will host a free, outdoor event called “U/D Block Party”, the official celebration of the opening of the neighbourhood’s first retailers along its main street, which will eventually span nine blocks.
The residential and retail service options at University District continues to grow, with new residents moving into the community and an array of retailers opening over the past several months. The Block Party event will provide Calgarians with an opportunity to safely enjoy a family and pet-friendly event, while supporting the many local and beloved businesses along University Avenue.
“The first block of our Retail Main Street has now been fully leased. This is a terrific milestone and we wanted to provide an opportunity to safely celebrate together,” says James Robertson, CEO and President of University of Calgary Properties Group. “We are so proud of the resiliency many of these businesses have shown throughout the course of the pandemic, and we welcome Calgarians to shop, eat, explore and take a closer look at all that we have accomplished at University District.”
The Block Party will feature complimentary activities including the President’s Choice® SuperDogs™, live music from Howlin’ Pete and the Wolves, roaming performers, outdoor patios, promotions and contests, and a KidsZone.
The President’s Choice® SuperDogs™ will perform three shows of their new show, Happy Together!, outside the University District Discovery Centre.
● Show 1: 1:00 – 1:30 p.m.
● Show 2: 2:15 – 2:45 p.m.
● Show 3: 3:30 – 4:00 p.m.
The U/D Block Party has been developed with social distancing and safety in mind. The event will take place in the heart of University District at the University District Discovery Centre (4410 University Avenue NW) and along University Avenue NW.
Free parking will be available that day in the lot directly south of the Discovery Centre. Spokespeople will be available on-site for interviews.
Event visitors will be encouraged to stop by the Discovery Centre for a chance to win one of two $200 prizes featuring a selection of gift cards to existing stores on the University District Retail Main Street.
