University District (U/D) has experienced an exciting few months, marked by substantial growth, further establishing itself as a vibrant residential and landmark destination community. With multiple residential announcements, the arrival of new retailers and a series of upcoming community events, here’s an update on everything happening in the community.

UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

University District has several free, community events planned for the spring and summer season:

The U/D Night Market Returns for Another Year

The U/D Night Market has returned for the 2025 season on the last Wednesday of each month until September. In partnership with Marketspot, the U/D Night Market offers the opportunity for guests to shop local artisan vendors, enjoy unique entertainment and connect with the community.

Upcoming Night Market dates include: June 25, July 30, August 27 and September 24 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Introducing: The Sales & Discovery Centre Open House

Showcasing U/D’s incredible builder-partners and residential offerings, the Sales & Discovery Centre is hosting its second public Show Suite Open House event.

Happening June 28 from 1-4 pm, guests can drop in and enjoy live vocals featuring Johnny Summers and an eight-piece ensemble from the Calgary Jazz Orchestra highlighting the music of Frank Sinatra.

U/D AND TRUMAN ANNOUNCED JOINT VENTURE ‘SCHOLAR’, FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND IN THE COMMUNITY

In April, University of Calgary Properties Group UCPG) and Truman announced a joint venture to develop a purpose-built rental residence, called Scholar, in University District. UCPG is the developer behind University District.

Under the partnership, both organizations will equally share ownership of the residential units. UCPG will retain ownership and management of the ground-floor retail space, while Truman will handle property management for the residential portion. This collaboration represents a strategic opportunity for UCPG to further enhance returns on land owned by the University of Calgary, supporting its academic goals.

The inaugural project of the joint venture is a six-story, mixed-use rental building at the southeast corner of University Avenue NW and McCaig Street NW. The development will feature approximately 13,000 square feet of retail space, 203 rental units specifically designed for long-term tenancy, and 226 parking stalls. Construction is expected to begin in late 2025, with completion targeted for 2027.

NEW BUSINESSES IN U/D

U/D has welcomed three new retail and office tenants to the community in the past few months, with an additional office tenant joining this fall. The most recent, Heal Wellness, marks the final tenant to open in Block 16. With the development of Block 17 underway, leasing opportunities are still available.

Heal Wellness (Block 16): Heal Wellness is a health-focused brand offering nutritious smoothies, acai bowls and wellness shots designed to support a balanced, energized lifestyle.

Verdex Capital (Central Block): Verdex Capital is a venture capital firm specializing in early-stage investments in sustainable technologies and innovative startups driving environmental and social impact.

TD Wealth Financial Management (Central Block): TD Asset Management is a leading Canadian investment firm offering a wide range of asset management solutions to clients.

Stringam LLP (Central Block): Coming to U/D this fall, Stringam Law offers compassionate, expert legal support—particularly in family and real estate law—delivering personalized solutions to help clients navigate complex, emotionally charged situations with confidence.
